A Path with a Heart – Carlos Castaneda

You must always keep in mind that a path is only a path. Each path is only one of a million paths. If you feel that you must now follow it, you need not stay with it under any circumstances. Any path is only a path. There is no affront to yourself or others in dropping a path if that is what your heart tells you to do. But your decision to keep on a path or to leave it must be free of fear and ambition. I caution you: look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself and yourself alone this one question. Does this path have a heart? All paths are the same. They lead nowhere. They are paths going through the brush or into the brush or under the brush of the Universe. The only question is: Does this path have a heart? If it does, then it is a good path. If it doesn’t, then it is of no use.

  1. A truth, indeed; however you have not, or Castanedo, has not, noted the fact that the heart is a complex vessel and a voyage towards a heart may well be fraught with perils beyond tides and stars. Some hearts are dark, some twisted beyond recognition, some fail even as I write, some harbour incalculable evil; some shine like frost as the dawn glints on it, some hearts can stay the time; others wait for their allotted beats to fail gently as the eventide moves through their menagerie. But all hearts exist in congruence and some in incongruity. And all hearts are paths towards infinity, like a footprint on the shoreline of time.

  2. the word ‘heart’ is alagoric to to the pure mind and heart, or atleast the pursuit for a pure heart and mind. I feel and if it contains evil intentions to pursue selfish deeds then one might not call it a heart, but instead an ignorant mind using the heart as an excuse to commit ignorant – perceptiable evil deeds…
